Businesses have mission statements to keep them on track, help communicate the overall mission of the organization to employees, and to help them in everyday decision making. Your family can enjoy these same benefits within your family by creating a mission statement all your own. Today I want to share how to write your family mission statement. There are 3 easy steps to follow to create a mission statement that reflects the priorities, personality, and purpose of your family. Once everyone has given their input and agreed on a mission statement, you can enjoy the benefit of facing challenges, schedules, parenting, marriage, and even life’s disappointments together as a team…a family on a mission!
How to write your family mission statement:
Step #1 Get together:
Set aside some time together as a family to get everyone’s input. Doesn’t hurt to serve ice cream at this meeting either. Ooh, maybe even an ice cream sundae bar! At this gathering, explain what a mission statement is and why it is important to have one. Some definitions (from dictionary.com) you might want to share with your family:
- Mission Statement: an official document that sets out the goals, purpose, and work of an organization.
- Priority: Highest of higher in importance, rank, privilege.
- Personality: The visible aspect of one’s character as it impresses on others.
- Purpose: The reason for which something exists or is done, made, used, etc
Step #2 Brainstorm as a family:
With those old enough to participate, go through each definition and talk about what sets your family apart, what you love about your family, what you would like to see become true in the future, etc. Discuss what these definitions make you think of in terms of your family. Explain that your priorities as a family should reflect the purpose you share as a family. Also, be sure to include the personality of your family so you are enjoying each other along the way!
Step #3 Put it on paper:
Now it’s time to write your family’s mission statement! Keep in mind this is YOURS so it can be whatever you decide as a family. In general, you want it to be specific, easily understood, and relatively short to make it easy to remember. Once you’ve completed your mission statement, consider framing it and displaying it in your home so you can see the visual reminder of what you are all about!
Here’s a sort of template to get you going but make it your own. It is meant to be a reflection of your one-of-a-kind family!
The ___________________ Family Mission Statement
We, the _________________family, want to be a family who (insert your main mission as a family here).
We make this our reality by daily:
- Living into our main priorities of: _______________________________________________
- Creating a home environment to be a place full of: _________________________________
- Encouraging and supporting each other by: _______________________________________
- And always treating each other with love and expecting the best of each other.
When you are finished, have those old enough sign it. For the younger ones, you could do their hand prints. If you have a favorite scripture or quote that represents your family, you can include that too. The main thing is to make it represent you and get your family excited about having this joint mission!
While the overall heart of your family will probably remain constant, during different seasons, ages of children, etc you may feel the need to “update” your mission statement. It may be a good idea to choose a time of year when you reflect on your mission statement together and reflect on how well you are doing at living it out. That would be a great time to make adjustments as needed. Have fun with this! I’d love to hear how you do with it and also, feel free to share yours with us by leaving a comment below or sharing a picture of your mission statement with us on our Facebook page to give us ideas.
