Use Your Gifts to Serve Others: Tips for Stepping Out In Faith to Serve

The Bible is clear that we have all been given gifts & talents. Figuring out how to use those talents to serve others and even discovering what our gifts are can sometimes be tricky though. I want to encourage you to take inventory of the ways God has gifted you and pray about how you can use those gifts and talents to serve others in your family, church, and community. When you are using your gifts to serve others, you will be living out your purpose and experiencing true joy. You really can make a difference with the gifts and talents God has given you.

A few weeks ago, I was asked to teach music at Vacation Bible School in my hometown. I love to sing but teaching music? That was out of my comfort zone. But I’ve learned God isn’t looking for your level of ability nearly as much as He is looking for your availability. So, knowing that, I said, “Sure! I’d love to teach music.”

If you will be available to Him, offer the gifts and talents He has given you back to Him, and trust Him with the details…amazing things will happen. We just completed VBS and the kids did great in spite of my lack of training in how to teach them. They had fun, learned more about Jesus’ love for them, and we all learned some fun dance moves too. Some things I was reminded of while teaching them:

  • When you are willing to serve, Jesus will work out the details
  • People will be blessed by what you have to give…including YOU
  • You don’t have to know everything about a subject to serve
  • We all have something to give

Ask Jesus to show you how you can serve your family, church, and community. Don’t allow your insecurities, not having all of the answers, or being unsure of where your talents fit in to the big picture prevent you from stepping out in faith to serve. If you make yourself available for God, He will help you get plugged in for His greater purpose.

The theme verse for VBS was “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it.” –Isaiah 30:21 My prayer for you is that as you pray for guidance in this area, you will hear His voice clearly and know how & where you can serve. Step out & make a difference!
