Use Your Blog To Serve People & Connect Them With Your Products & Services


Why do you blog? If you are getting “stuck” in the process of blogging, it may be because you are too concerned with the rules and are forgetting the purpose of your blog. When you are blogging to build your business, you aren’t trying to win a Pulitzer here. You should use your blog to SERVE PEOPLE & CONNECT THEM with your products & services. That’s pretty much it, right? So please don’t let the “how to blog” get in the way of “why you blog”.

So, how do you blog with purpose? You have to know WHY you are blogging. If you don’t know, then you won’t do it consistently or effectively (or manage to have much fun while doing it).

If you are in business, your main reasons for blogging are to:

  • Build relationships with your customers
  • Provide your customers great content
  • Build your business

Once you know WHY you blog and that it really isn’t so much about HOW you do it but WHY you do it, you may be more inspired to sit down and type! Yes, there are some guidelines that will encourage others to read your blog posts and keep them coming back. But if your blog is more about serving and less about being seen or being afraid of making a mistake, you’ll be doing greater good for your customers & for yourself.

Another example of where the WHY is more important than the HOW is the difference between showing hospitality and “entertaining”.

Hospitality says:

  • Come on in!
  • May I take your coat?
  • Make yourself comfortable.
  • Can I get you anything?
  • You are WELCOME here!
  • I’m here to serve you.

Entertaining says:

  • Am I doing it right?!?!
  • I’m more preoccupied by what it looks like than how it makes you feel.
  • I want YOU to LIKE me!!!
  • I have to re-decorate my whole house and have it spotless before I invite you over for dinner.
  • I can’t have you over unless everything is perfect.

Now, tell me, would you rather be shown hospitality or be entertained?

I’d pick hospitality any day. You know why? Hospitality is focused on SERVING OTHERS and Entertaining is focused on BEING SEEN BY OTHERS. There’s a big difference.

Do you have a heart for truly serving your customers? If you do, it will show up in your blog and they will feel welcome, served, and they will want to come back. Don’t worry about entertaining them or getting everything exactly right. Just show up to serve. Not to say that we shouldn’t always work to become better at blogging…and everything in life really. We are always “becoming” but don’t allow being in process to prevent you from producing anything right now.

No, you may not be an expert writer but your customers didn’t seek you out for writing tips anyway. Your customers are looking to you because you ARE an expert in YOUR niche. Blogging is just ONE way that you can share about what it is you do well and show how your expertise can serve your customers. It is ONE way of many that you can show hospitality to your customers through your business. Really, you don’t have to be a writer to blog any more than you have to be Rachael Ray in order to invite your neighbor over for dinner.

Here’s how to show hospitality on your blog:

  • Write with love
  • Have a heart for serving your customers
  • Choose things your ideal customers are interested in
  • Keep searching for ways to share useful content that will make their lives easier
  • Make it more about them and less about you

If you do these things with your blog, they’ll be eager to come back and excited to share you with others. When you make blogging (& life) less about you and more about serving others, you’ll see great results.
