Unlikely: When you feel less than qualified

1993: I graduate high school and decide I will go to the community college for 2-years to get my certificate in “Office Systems.”

1998: Why in the world would God be calling me to seminary? Women don’t go to seminary! Besides, how would I pay for it all?

2001: God opens door for me to be a youth minister full-time.

2002: I move to Miami, Florida for youth ministry, truly believing that I would be single the rest of my life because Godly men just didn’t exist in Miami.

2003: God opens the door for me to be a middle school teacher with NO prior teaching experience, even after I spelled “principle” wrong in an email to the “principal!”

2008: I laughed at the thought of social media being anything! I mean really, it’s just a fad that will soon go away!

2014: I move to DeLand asking God to please not let me “die here.”

When I think back through my life, I can’t help but to think of the words of Christine Caine:

“God has always done unlikely things through unlikely people in an unlikely place with an unlikely strategy to get an unlikely result.” ~Christine Caine

You see, back in 1993, I would have never imagined that I would one-day graduate with my Doctorate degree.

I would have never of imagined that by just taking a step of faith and attending seminary, that God would provide for all of my needs in the first two-weeks that I was there!

I would have never of imagined that one day, I would be working in the church and doing youth ministry full-time.

I would have never of imagined that in Miami, of all places, I would meet the man who I thought didn’t exist.

I would have never of imagined that I would become a teacher after passing my teacher exam (that I didn’t think I would pass) or even worse, sending an email to the “principle” with her title spelled wrong!

I would have never of imagined that I’d be working in the field of social media full-time after once believing it was only a fad.

I would have never of imagined that I would fall in love with DeLand and the people here, after asking God to not let me die here!

Unlikely

Maybe you find yourself in a similar situation. Why would God use you? Why would He help you be successful? Why would He fulfill your heart’s desire? Why you? You just feel so “unlikely.” You’ve screwed up too many times. You’ve failed more than you would like to admit! You feel as though you’ve missed out on God’s Plan A and honestly, you’re just trying to make it through Plan B. You’re not smart enough, rich enough, good enough, and quite frankly, you just feel unlikely. You just feel less than qualified.

Here’s the good news:

Don’t feel qualified? Good! He will qualify you!

In all of my personal examples above, never did I feel “qualified.” I always felt unlikely! Seriously, how would I survive in seminary? Seminary was for guys who were a LOT smarter than me! How would I make it as a youth minister? Women didn’t do those things! How could I possibly get across to those teenagers that Jesus offered them a life of freedom with real adventures that the world could not offer?

And teaching middle school?!?! After my first day, after the kids left, I sat in a student desk and cried. Did I just make the worst decision ever? What did I just get myself into?

And then social media?! Really Lord? Why would anyone listen to me? I don’t know a thing about social media! No one is even following me. Are you crazy?

And lastly, DeLand. This was the one place I didn’t want to go to, but now you are leading me and my family there?

Yep, in every instance of my life, I have felt “unlikely.” But this is what I LOVE!

He takes our weakness and turns it into a strength. He takes us and qualifies us. He takes us and changes our heart. He takes us and grows us like we never imagined!

Today, I want to encourage you! You may very well feel unlikely. You may be questioning the calling that God has given you. But remember,

“God has always done unlikely things through unlikely people in an unlikely place with an unlikely strategy to get an unlikely result.”

Do you trust God enough to step out?
Do you trust God even if you don’t have all the answers?
Do you trust God even when you feel helpless?
Do you trust God even when you feel so unqualified?
Do you trust God enough to do what He’s called you to do?

If you answered yes, get ready because God is going to do things in your life that will get you an unlikely result, one that is so much better than you could have hoped for! Get ready to live life to the fullest!

Share with me below: Do you feel “unlikely?” What’s holding you back from trusting God with everything you have?

  1. Yes, I enjoyed your “Testimonial Resume”, it reminds me of my journey with Him (1 Corinthians 1:27-29). I thank God for leading me, I thank Jesus for praying to the Father to send the Holy Spirit & thanking Him for Ephesians 3:20, for His Glory, in Jesus’ Name !!!

  2. Oh Jen, I love this post so much! So many times we think, “what in the world? I never imagined I’d be HERE or doing THIS! BUT GOD… He has a plan and even through my mistakes, my sin, and my rebellion when I come back to Him, He is faithful to forgive and to work it ALL out for my good and His plan & purpose for my life.
