From time to time we all get stuck in confusion, become frustrated over losing things and let our emotions take over. Not all at once I hope, but any of these situations make our lives more complicated than we want them to be. Just one can make me crazy. Over the years I have learned simple behaviors that make life so much easier. I encourage you to practice them for your business AND personal life. Don’t panic. Simply stop; breathe and employ the appropriate tip.
- What if you DID know – what would your answer be?
It’s so easy to get confused by too many choices, deadlines, self-doubt or pressure from others or yourself. Confusion or disorientation can suck the life out of you and set off your panic button. Eventually you feel caught in a web of bewilderment, uncertainty and perplexity.
Whoa! Know that by the time you identify that you are confused or disoriented an alarm should go off in your head to help you change the direction quickly. Use this simply technique:
“I am feeling confused about this. I really don’t know what to do. I don’t know the answer. Okay, so if I DID know the answer what would it be? If I DID know what to do what would I do?”
I am a speaker, trainer and coach. Often when I ask questions of others, they will look at me puzzled and say, “I don’t know.” Quickly I say back to them, “If you DID know, what would you say?” Within a few seconds they give me an answer. Even THEY are surprised.
When my kids were growing up the same thing would happen. I’d ask them a question and they’d look at me confused or disoriented and say, “I don’t know.” I’d simply say, “If you DID know what would you say?” Immediately they would blurt it out.
Try it on yourself. If you DID know what would the answer be?
- Lord, you know where ________ is. Please lead me right to it.
It’s happened a million times. I need to find something and it’s not where I think it should be. I search three times. Then I start searching other places, getting a little more panicky when I can’t uncover it. “I NEED it! Where IS it?” You know the feeling!
And then….I stop and simply pray, “Lord, you know where it is. I pray that as my eyes scan you will have them stop right where it is. I pray that you will lead me right to it. Thank you.” And sure enough, as I trust God to lead me, I find it. Whew! Try it.
- Is this feeling helping me or hurting me?
Let’s face it. At times our emotions can the best of us. They can be the cause for your thinking and doing things that simply don’t serve you well. It seems like THEY are in control. The trick is to CATCH yourself and ask, “Is this feeling helping or hurting me? Will I get what I want by feeling this way? Is this stealing my joy or adding to it?”
If it is a self-defeating emotion, let it go. Release it. Shake your finger at it and say, “Ha! I know what you’re up to. Just move along now.” Then usher in the joy and assurance God has for you. Proceed to problem solving and make a sour feeling turn into sweet triumph.
