I recently heard a story from a lady about how a few simple words changed her future. When she was in high school, a teacher took the time to encourage her and tell her she was smart. From that day on, she believed she was smart and gave more effort to everything she did. Her grades improved, she felt more confident, and she believes that those words spoken to her that day made her a better person.
All of that from just a few words! Before that, she said she was an OK student but those sweet words from her teacher changed how she viewed herself & what she believed she was capable of doing in life. Those words spoke life into her then and even today, many years later, they are still producing good fruit in her life and in the life of her family.
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21
Have you heard the song Words by Hawk Nelson? The lyrics are a wonderful example of this scripture. Here is the chorus of the song but the entire song is a powerful reminder for us to be careful in choosing our words.
Chorus of Words by Hawk Nelson
Words can build you up
Words can break you down
Start a fire in your heart or
Put it out
Let my words be life
Let my words be truth
I don’t wanna say a word
Unless it points the world back to You
Oh how I want to speak life into my family, friends, and everyone I encounter! I want to build them up with my words, to encourage them, and to help them rise higher in all that they do. Will you join me in being intentional about choosing to speak life into others?
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29
Lord, please help me, help all of us, recognize the power of our words and help us choose to speak life into others today and every day, amen.
