Make a Difference – Boldly and Joyfully

In the movie, “Dead Poet’s Society,” Robin Williams plays the part of a literature professor at an English boy’s school.  In one scene, he is talking to the boys about literature, normally a dry, uninteresting subject for them.  But he captivates them by describing the great adventures literature can take them on, the fascinating people they can meet, and how their lives can make a difference.  All eyes are on him as they are spellbound by his words.  Then he swings wide the door of their lives when he challenges, “The powerful play continues and you can contribute a verse.  What will be your verse?”  As the professor challenged the boys to discover how they would contribute significantly to this world, so God calls us.  He equips us with Spiritual Gifts and asks us to discover those gifts and use them boldly.

How exciting that God designed each of us with a heart to make a difference and then equipped us so we can! Embrace how God designed you and use your Spiritual Gifts, Personality and Passions to serve whole-heartedly, with confidence, knowing that what you do matters.

Have you seen a need that tugs at your heart but you don’t really want to meet that need? Sometimes you can feel guilty and think, “I really SHOULD help,” but it’s an area that you really wish someone else would address. Or maybe you were asked to volunteer and you didn’t want to disappoint someone so you got yourself into a situation that you dreaded. This is very common, but it is not God’s plan. Sure, sometimes we help because of the need but for on-going, regular service, remember that God designed you to serve joyfully.

You have been learning about how you are designed. So when you are looking for a way to make a difference consider these points:

  • Your PASSION will tell you WHERE to serve  (children, adults, women, young married, single parents, elderly, disabled; building maintenance, health care, technology, hospitality, special events, etc.)
  • Your SPIRITUAL GIFTS will tell you WHAT you will do  (teach, encourage, organize, lead, care for, pray, reach out to the lost, etc.)
  • Your PERSONALITY will tell you HOW you will do it.  (behind the scenes, “up front,” serve on a team, work alone or one-on-one, choose “one time” projects, take charge, follow, get things accomplished, walk alongside someone, etc.)

So review your design and see how all these pieces work together. Choose ONE area and do it well!  When you take on lots of service areas you end up getting burned out – that is NOT God’s way!

List your passion, Spiritual Gifts and personality, Think and pray about how you can make a difference with your unique design. If you are already serving, evaluate your joy – or lack of joy. It’s okay to “retire” from one area and choose a different way to make a difference. Please share in the comment section how you are serving now or would like to serve and how you are implementing your Spiritual Gifts, Personality and Passion! What a difference we can make in the world if we all serve boldly!!

  1. Betsy- thanks for putting this together so clearly! God has just taken an area of service which was consuming me(read:killing me!) off of my plate, and I’m praying to go wherever He has in mind. Your clear description has given me a kickstart! 🙂
