Social Media Doesn’t Have to be Difficult

  • “Social media has done nothing for my business”
  •  “I’m seeing no results with all the effort I’m putting forth on social media”
  •  “No matter how hard I try, I can’t get ANYONE to like, comment or share my posts”
  •  “I can’t keep up with all the social media changes that seem to take place on a daily basis”
  •  “Social media is just too confusing, why bother?”

If so, you are not alone. But today, I have some good news for you:  Social Media DOESN’T Have To Be Difficult!

Contrary to popular belief, just having a presence on social media is not going to get you the results that you are hoping for. Far too many small business owners today are under the false impression that if they set up a Facebook page or Twitter account, they will immediately have thousands of followers who can’t wait to get their hands on their product or service. When this doesn’t happen, they walk away discouraged and believing that social media is just a waste of time.

Truth be told, small business owners today are pursuing social media in all the wrong ways! Social media doesn’t have to be difficult…as long as you are SMART about what you are doing and how you are spending your time online:

S: SOCIAL-One of the key points to remember is that the majority of people come to social media to be….SOCIAL. They don’t wake up thinking to themselves, “Let me hop on Facebook and see what I can buy today.” Instead, they come to be social and to interact with others. As a small business owner, your first goal should be to create a community that gives you the opportunity to engage with current and potential clients who really want to engage with YOU and get to know YOU.  Creating a community gives you the opportunity not only provide VALUE to your community, but it also allows you the opportunity extend customer service to your community while also building a loyalty.

M: Marketing Strategy-Far too many businesses today jump into social media with no marketing strategy. A few weeks later, they find themselves completely worn out and discouraged. If you want to see results on social media, you have to have a plan in place. This includes knowing what your specific, measurable goals are, knowing what your keywords are, knowing where your clients “hang out” online, what questions are they asking, knowing who your competitors are and what they are doing right and wrong, etc. Knowing these things beforehand will set you up for SUCCESS online!

A: Audience-Today, let me give you permission-you don’t have to be all things to all people! Honestly, this is one of the biggest traps that businesses fall into when it comes to social media; they try to be all things to all people and quite honestly, it’s impossible. One of the key components to social media success is having a very clear understanding of your target audience is. If you try to be all things to all people, you are headed for disaster and will soon find that you are not reaching anyone.

R: Realistic-When setting up goals for your social media platforms, they key is being realistic. Remember, you can’t expect to have thousands of followers overnight. Social media is all about persistence and patience. Social media growth and influence takes time and quite honestly, it can take up to a year until you start seeing some real results. Far too many business owners quit after one month because they are not seeing the results that they had hoped for. Remember, people do business with those they trust and creating that trust and loyalty online will take time. Be persistent (even when it seems as though no one is engaging) and be patient.

T: Time Management-I have good news for you! You don’t have to be on social media 24/7! When you have a social media strategy in place that gives a clear overview of who your target audience is, your niche specific keywords and hashtags, realistic goals, etc., you will soon find that the time you do spend on social media has a purpose behind it. You are not just posting for the sake of posting!
