Setting Yearly Goals in January….It’s Ok!

It’s the middle of January and I am praying and planning out the year ahead of me. I know many of you have already completed this task, but I am just now carving out time to map out my year. I realize that God’s timing is always perfect…so setting my yearly goals in January is ok!

While friends and co-workers were spending time in their 2015 planners in November or December I was visiting family, helping plan and execute a friend’s surprise birthday party, participating in my family’s Christmas gathering and a bridal shower for a niece. I spent the week after Christmas with my daughters and their families and the next thing I knew it was the first week of January!

But, that’s ok…. I’m giving myself the same grace I would give to someone else. I’m spending time with God and others to plan out my year and it’s ok that I didn’t have this process done by December 31st. Here are a few things I’m doing to jumpstart and complete my planning process:

  • I’m having a Vision Board Party! I’ve gathered poster board and magazines and invited my Life Group over to eat chili and create our boards together. You might gather friends from your church, workplace or the gym and invite them to your house to create a visual of what God wants you to focus on and invest in this year. Here’s a great blog written by Kelly Gore to get you started, https://ibloom.co/blog/how-to-create-a-vision-board/.
  • I’m spending a weekend away for quiet reflection, writing and girlfriend-time. A dear friend booked a nearby retreat center the first weekend in February and invited me to join her. I am thrilled to have this time away from my home and the constant distractions; I’ve even started my list of what I’d like to accomplish! You may not be able to get away for an entire weekend, but why not schedule a Saturday afternoon for a time of reflection and planning? You could swap kids with a friend or ask your spouse to take the kids for an afternoon outing while you use this time for yourself. Be creative about finding ways to have a chunk of time and space for you and God to plan out your year….even in January (or February!)
  • I’m working through the beginning exercises in our iBloom in Life and Business Planner. I am assessing what is going well and not going well in all areas of my life. Our spiral-bound version is sold out at this time, but you can still order the printable version of our planner here. Whatever way you keep up with your life, spend some quiet time reflecting on the changes, if any you’d like to make this year.
  • I am taking the Nike saying, “Just do it!” and applying it to my own life. For whatever reason, at the end of 2014 I found myself not having as much fun as I want to have. I can come up with reasons, but it’s up to me to make space and time to enjoy the people and activities in my life that bring me joy. So, I made a list of people who I was saying, “We need to get together!” and I’ve messaged and called them with two dates and two restaurants/activities we could do together. I want to be intentional about the time I spend with others. So, whom would you like to meet for lunch this Saturday? Or, go for a long run with? Call or send them an email – but make it happen!

In the midst of the New Year and all the plans, goals and things you’d like to do, be sure you also enjoy the journey…..and if you’re still making plans in March…..it’s ok.

In making a conscious effort to stay connected to those I love and care about, I have specific people on my list to mail greeting cards to throughout 2015. Yep, there’s a tool for that! I have a love/hate relationship with technology but I’m learning to embrace the gifts it has to offer. Grace, that’s a wonderful reminder–making a note in my planner about that Lori! Happy 2015. Looking forward to seeing the details as they come to the surface.
