I don’t know about you but I can get discouraged when I look at my to-do list and around my house at the end of the day, and I see all of the things that are “undone.” I see the “gap” between what I wanted to do and what actually got done and I think:
- Why does my to-do list keep growing instead of being checked off?
- But I’ve been going non-stop all day! What did I accomplish???
- I need more hours in my day!
- If only I had ___________, then I could do what I need to do. (Housekeeper, nanny, more money, etc.)
But then I remember, “Progress not perfection.” The truth is that God has given me everything I need to do what He has called me to do today. Every day that I choose to follow His lead, I am making progress. It is so important to identify that progress and celebrate your wins. We have 3 girls ages 7 ½, 2 ½, and 7 months old and I work from home. So much of what I do each day doesn’t show clear “results”. I’m investing in my children, cleaning the kitchen counter/sweeping the floors (multiple times a day), and doing projects with work that take time before seeing the finished product. Some days it’s easy to start to feel like I’m not accomplishing anything.
If you are struggling with seeing your progress, I encourage you to set an appointment with yourself and Jesus. Grab your coffee, get in a cozy spot, and set aside this time for yourself. This may mean you have to get up before everyone else or that you leave your kiddos with your husband or a friend and head out to Panera for a couple of hours. Whatever you need to do to have this special time will be worth it!
How to track your progress and celebrate your wins:
- Bring your planner and your journal.
- Pray for Him to show you the highlights of the last 6 months or so.
- Let Him show you the places where you are not the same person you were 6 months ago.
- Write down what He shows you.
- Celebrate with Him where you are not the same!
“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” Philippians 1:6 NLT
He is changing You if you have invited Him in to do the work. It may not be happening as quickly as you want but remember His timing is perfect. Ask Him for reminders as you go through the day. Ask Him to show you all of the places in your life where progress is happening. Write down those top moment and wins. Make a list of all of the things you are grateful for in this season of your life. Take time to celebrate what God is doing before you move on to the next task. When we spend time in His presence, He shows us what the most important things are for right now, in this season of your life, with the resources you have. He doesn’t take us back to last week’s failures to make us feel bad. He instead corrects us and leads us back to the path He wants us to be on. He helps us move forward and become more and more like Him each day and thank goodness His mercy is new each morning.
