“I think you may have just saved my marriage.”
“We thought our child was an alien. Now we understand. You really helped our family.”
“I finally know why my boss acts the way he does and I realize he’s not out to get me!”
“Mom, everyone else hates that teacher, but you helped me see how to get along with her.”
I have taught MANY groups – men, women, teachers, work staffs, parents, high schoolers, and my own family – about The Personalities. The above statements are a few of the many A-HA’S that people have gotten from learning about The Personalities.
You see, we are hard wired from birth with a specific way of relating in the world. While we are still in the womb, neuropathways are formed in our brain that is like a superhighway for how we take on the world. We go through our lives thinking everyone is wired like us and then can’t understand why we clash with people or why others drive us nuts. Knowing about the various personalities will help you gain some understanding about yourself and help you learn to get along better with others.
To give you a taste of the four basic personalities, read the following descriptions. Which one are you MOST like? Maybe you are like two of the personalities. Choose one or two of the descriptions that are MOST like you.
The Playful Sanguine personality is happy, joyful and always looking for a way to have fun. They tend to be a bit messy and talk a lot. They make friends easily, are optimistic, and have a difficult time sticking to a schedule.
The Proper Melancholy likes to do things the “right” way and expect others to as well. They really enjoy their alone time. They tend to be analytical, neat and tidy, and insightful. Others may see them as being critical and judgmental.
The Powerful Choleric likes to lead others and make things happen. Others might see them as a whirlwind. They are the most prone to be workaholics. They love and challenge, enjoy fixing problems and exude confidence.
The Peaceful Phlegmatic is steady, easy-going and flexible. They seem so easy to get along with but they have a will of iron and if pushed they will dig in their heels. They are generally good listeners, kind and have a dry sense of humor.
Once you identify your own personality, try to identify others who are close to you. Then try to see how you can adjust the way you communicate with them so they will hear you.
Remember, we are hard wired with a distinct personality but we can understand others and learn how to get along better with just about anyone.
