Monthly Meal Planning System

I want to be efficient with my time! So, a major focus for this quarter has been creating good systems that allow me to make the most of my time.

One area where I needed a new system was with my meal planning. We previously did our meal planning weekly, but I always found myself STUCK because I couldn’t figure out what to make each week. I felt like we were in the same pattern, eating the same thing week after week. So, I started thinking about a different way to do our meal planning. And, I created the perfect system for us…a monthly meal planning system! Here’s how it works:

#1: Create Daily Dinner Themes

Identify a type of meal or meat that you’d like to have each day of the week. Here’s what we decided on:

  • Monday – Soup (or Grill)
  • Tuesday – Mexican
  • Wednesday – Instant Pot
  • Thursday- Chicken
  • Friday- Pizza
  • Saturday – Beef
  • Sunday – New Recipe

#2: Create a monthly calendar

Once I knew the type of meal that we’d have each day, it made it really easy to assign our typical meals to a specific day. Then, I had fun going through my favorite recipes, cookbooks, and Pinterest pins to create a menu for the month. I know that it sounds like a lot, but it was actually really fast! I did the entire plan for the month in less than an hour. The initial work is done, so I can easily recycle the monthly menu from month to month and no one in my family has even noticed!

#3: Plan ahead

Now that I know the meal plan for the month, it makes it really easy to plan ahead. For example, we purchase our meat from local farmers, so now that I know exactly what meat I need to order for the month. Plus, now that I’m not creating a menu every week, I have more time to meal prep.

I love that this new (to us) monthly meal planning system is allowing me to be more efficient with my time!

  4. Thank you for this meal planning system. Sometimes, when you have been married for awhile meals can become routine and that is not me! So, taking your idea of themes and marrying it with my cross-cultural interests I’ve made a plan! I like your Tuesday night Mexican so I started there, and now have added English (Friday night Fish and Chips healthy version), Monday American (such variety I can ring the changes), Wednesday is Italian night, Thursday is now going to be French (research), Saturday night Chinese or Indian and Sunday a new recipe from somewhere new!
