List Building: Your Welcome Email

An important piece of the puzzle of List Building is your initial email that the client receives. If you use MailChimp as many of our clients do, this is called the “Welcome Email”. This piece is so integral as it is the email that allows people to receive what you promised whether it be the freebie from your website, a digital product, etc.

Here are the steps to make this email unique to your brand AND specific to that list:

  1. Create the new list if you have not already. {always have each freebie/product set up as a list of its own}
  2. Go to “Lists” and click on the name of your list that you just made.

  4. Put at checkmark in the box for “Send a final welcome email” Screen Shot 2015-03-30 at 5.33.26 AM

  8. Change the Subject line. {Keep in mind, you must keep *|LIST:NAME|*: at the beginning of the Subject  line. This coding will simply pull in your List name.}
  9. The List name at the top of the email {Test – in this example} can be changed, removed or even replaced with an image. I would recommend placing a header in that section to make it brand specific for you and your business. Screen Shot 2015-03-30 at 5.40.51 AM
  10. While hovering at the end of the dotted red box, click “edit” Screen Shot 2015-03-30 at 5.45.04 AM
  11. Write your message. A couple of things you want to make sure you include: Thank them, give them the link for their promised freebie or product, give them a next step. Screen Shot 2015-03-30 at 5.48.10 AM
  12. Click “Save & Close”
  13. Test it out. This is probably THE most important step!

  1. Hi Dawn.

    Thanks for this post. I thought I had it right, but this was a great checklist. Here’s the link to my freebie. Let me know what you think of the sales page.
