I looked so forward to this day: Christmas shopping in Cincinnati!! Every year I went to Cincinnati to shop, spend the night at a hotel, and shop some more. This was a treat for me and a way to get most of the shopping done. I’d also have the opportunity to really notice decorations and stop and listen to choirs singing at the malls.
I’d come home with stories of interesting and fun interactions with people – and of course LOTS of pretty shopping bags. I loved the pretty Christmas shopping bags. There were bags with stars or quaint village scenes, or pretty ornaments on ribbons.
This particular year a Nordstrom’s had opened at one of the malls I went to. When I entered the store I saw some ladies walking around with a Nordstrom’s shopping bag. It was the prettiest shopping bag I had ever seen!! It had a lovely winter scene on it and the handle was a pretty red cord. I really wanted that bag! I thought, “Surely I can find something on my list here so I can get one of those shopping bags.” I wandered around the store and tried and tried to find something just right. I just couldn’t find something I needed for the right price. I finally realized I just couldn’t justify spending money just to have something to put in a pretty shopping bag.
I started to leave the store without my pretty shopping bag when that little voice inside me said, “Just ask.” No…I couldn’t just ask for one of those pretty shopping bags…or could I? I walked toward a checkout counter and the clerk left just as I was approaching. Again I started to leave and again I heard, “Just ask.”
I mustered up courage and walked up to a counter and said, “May I please have one of those pretty shopping bags?” Without hesitation the clerk said, “Sure,” and handed one to me!!! I was shocked and excited!! I opened the bag, and put the empty bag over my wrist and walked happily out the door.”
When I was finished shopping at that mall, I took my packages to the car and put them in the back. I got into the driver’s seat and started the car. Then I looked at the car parked next to me and it had a sign on the side of it. Guess what that sign said? JUST ASK!!
