“When you wish someone joy, you wish them peace, love, prosperity, happiness… all the good things.” Maya Angelou
Joy is my favorite word and I have decorations here, there, and everywhere bearing this word! Last Christmas, my 2 daughters, their boyfriends, and I spent the holidays at a beach house in FL. As I packed presents, food, games, etc. I thought hmmm… we need a place to leave messages, quotes, pictures, song lyrics, etc. that have a joyful message!
So, I purchased a piece of poster board and packed some markers. The first night after everyone had gone to bed, I taped the “Joy Board” on the side of the fridge. When they awoke the next morning and discovered it, I could tell they were thinking, “Oh great, another one of Mom’s ideas!” But, we all had fun filling it up! Some people left drawings of snowmen and other holiday objects, while others left quotes of things we said on the trip!
You see, I strongly believe that everyday before your feet hit the ground, you have the choice to choose joy! And you continue to have that choice throughout the day! Being joy-filled or joyful is to live above your circumstances and to tap into the love and peace that God has waiting for you!
I had family staying in the area; they were “encouraged” to write on our “Joy Board” too! One of my brother-in-laws is a retired teacher and gifted in art. He grumbled every time I asked him to participate. I was actually curious to see what amazing drawings and sayings he would include! One day, I saw him over at the “Joy Board” with markers in hand, so after he left I went over to see his artwork. I was so excited! As soon as I saw his “picture”, I had to laugh-he had made a dot! He said all he was asked to do was put something on the board!
So, what are some tangible ways you can choose joy and encourage your family to follow? It doesn’t have to be a “Joy Board”- it can be anything that encourages your family and friends to look for and celebrate the blessings in life. Help me brainstorm some new ways to choose joy- I want to carry this forward with my children and someday Grandchildren!
