“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”
Galatians 5:22-23, ESV
My favorite word is JOY! I’m so excited to write about this second attribute of the Fruit of the Spirit! Last month I decided to write about each of the nine attributes of the Fruit of the Spirit; one per month. I began with quality number one in February, since it’s typically considered the month of love.
This month I’ll move from writing about love to writing about joy. Many of you know the acronym- Jesus, Others, Yourself. I personally think this sums up the word so well. When I choose to live my life in that order, I am filled with joy beyond words! I have not always been happy in my circumstances, but I have found joy that comes from God. His Spirit fills me with a joyful presence that, at times, would be hard to muster on my own.
Recently, a friend told me she watched the joy-filled life I lived during my divorce. She was a family friend for almost 20 years and was as devastated as I when my marriage ended. My response to her was, “Seriously?” I remember such pain and hurt…. tears and sorrow… But, she saw a woman clinging to God like never before. She saw a woman praying without ceasing. She saw a woman setting aside her pride and allowing others to love and serve her. She saw joy!
I tell you about my past because I want everyone to experience the joy that comes from the Lord! I want everyone to look up and out; to look beyond his or her circumstances to the joy that is waiting! You may be thinking I don’t know your story- I don’t know your pain! And you’re right. But, I do know the ONE who does know your pain and story. Spend time in God’s presence and allow the Spirit to fill you with joy and love. Spend time with your Bible and read God’s truths and promises. Spend time in prayer talking to your Father. Spend time listening to worship music, sermons, and podcasts and hear others tell of God’s greatness!
Are you living a joy-filled life that comes from abiding in God? We receive hope when we read each other’s stories! Please share in the comment section below.
“But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.” Galations 5:22-23, The Message
