I recently reinstated Friday Friend Day. After living here in San Diego for several years, last year turned out to be totally overscheduled! I nurtured a few friends but there were many I hardly saw! This year I chose to make my theme Nourish My Soul. I have pulled back from a few commitments allowing me to restore some “friend” time, which DOES nourish my soul.
So I think ahead and invite people to do things with me on Fridays. Most of the time it’s taking a walk, usually with an ocean view so we get to exercise and talk at the same time. Or hang out at a little coffee shop. Sometimes we will go to one of the many interesting things to do here in San Diego.
A couple weeks ago, I had a friend scheduled to meet with. I hadn’t seen her in quite a while so I was really looking forward to catching up. She had to cancel. So I invited someone else. She had plans. And someone else…who also had plans.
Well…let me tell you! I almost had a meltdown. My face got all scrunched up, tears started to well up and I felt the frustration of my Friday Friend Day failing building up within. THEN all of a sudden I heard that distinct voice within saying, “I’m your friend today.” Of course!! Yes, God!! I’ll spend my day with You! So I gathered my Bible study, a couple books and my journal and headed to the coast. I parked up high and rolled the windows down so I could feel the breeze and hear the waves. I read and prayed and listened and felt my Friend pour into me exactly what I needed!
Do you feel like scrunching up your face, stomping your feet and indulging in a little pity party? Ever?! Listen. Listen. Maybe your very Best Friend of all is calling you to a Friend Day. Indulge in your blissful getaway with Him.
Just as lotions and fragrance give sensual delight, a sweet friendship refreshes the soul. Proverbs 27:9 (MSG)
