In 2010, the women on the iBloom Team went through the exercise of discovering how to have a theme word or phrase for the year. It seemed like this came so easily for everyone, but not me. I was in a devastating place; the ending of my 30- year marriage and the only word I could think of was “help”!
I remember hearing the other women share their themes with great enthusiasm and excitement! I wanted a theme; I wanted a word I could cling to as I went through the rest of this difficult process. Someone suggested I choose “possibilities” and I thought, “that’s a good one”! What could be more promising than that! I would often refer to the word, but it wasn’t something I embraced.
In 2011, I had an experience that left me with a theme that truly came from God. I was in church on a random Sunday when the worship band played “Awakening” by Chris Tomlin. As I stood singing, something changed in my core; my heart heard this song and the word “awakening” became my theme. Not “kind of my theme” or “good enough”, I knew this would be a year of awakenings… things that had been put on hold would come alive and new things would be brought forth in my life! To say I was excited was an understatement!
I tell this story because the iBloom Team wants to encourage you to spend time focusing on what’s been going on in your life- the good and the bad. As you let your mind and thoughts drift, is there a word or phrase that keeps popping up? Is there an area of your life you sense God nudging you to spend more time on? Or, do you need to take your life in a new direction? I also want to say that if you are having a difficult year, don’t put pressure on yourself to complete this task right now… put it on hold. You may be in a season where you can only complete the tasks that are necessary for daily living; you haven’t the time or the energy to select your theme!
Be encouraged! As you spend time in prayer and reflection, God will reveal the theme He has selected for you this year. You just need to listen and be receptive. Finding your theme is an exciting process- don’t rush it! And once you have a theme, embrace it, live it, and love it!
We’d love to hear if you have selected a theme for this year. Please share in the comments section.
