I’m enjoying this journey blogging about the Fruit of the Spirit. This month I’m writing about goodness- the sixth attribute of the Fruit of the Spirit. The Merriam-Webster dictionary lists one definition of “good” as, “virtuous, right, commendable”.
“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” John 7:38, NIV
I remember years ago being at a gathering and telling a story about something I had done with my 2 young daughters. Another woman listening said, “Oh, you are such a good Mom.” I know she meant that as a compliment, but it hit a place deep in my heart. So, does that mean those days when I don’t serve healthy meals or there are toys everywhere, I was a bad Mom? I knew what she meant; she was affirming that I had done something good for my children. But her comment struck a cord that has stuck with me through the years.
I recently heard a sermon where the pastor talked about matters of the heart. In his teaching he shared how we need to monitor our heart. That Sunday, he centered his sermon on this verse;
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23, NIV
Wow, so everything comes from the heart! That means we need to daily connect with God and allow Him to fill us with His goodness. We also need to go to Him as our filter; asking Him to show us anything that is not pleasing or good in our lives. And then do the hard work of releasing or pruning that from our lives- kind of like heart surgery!
As I’m writing this, I’m taking in my own words. I want to be a beacon of light that draws others to Christ…. I want my words and actions to reflect His goodness in me. I know I fall short, but each day is a new beginning… a re-do… I love that about God!
I hope you will spend time praying, pondering, journaling, and maybe even memorizing these scriptures. Our good words, actions, and deeds are an extension of God’s love and goodness in us. May we choose to allow God’s goodness to flow through us!
“But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts-murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” Matthew 15:18-19
