Sometimes, well maybe most of the time, we long for God to give us a bent for His words of wisdom. This might be a prayer you keep at your desk or in your Bible and refer to when you need focus, guidance or a special God-connection.
Here is an excerpt from Psalm 119 followed by my personalized paraphrase. Write your own paraphrase. Or write it as if God is talking to you directly. Use this as a time of intimacy with God. Let Him be in charge of your day, your business, your bent.
Psalm 119:33-40 The Message (MSG)
God, teach me lessons for living so I can stay the course.
Give me insight so I can do what you tell me—my whole life one long, obedient response.
Guide me down the road of your commandments; I love traveling this freeway!
Give me a bent for your words of wisdom, and not for piling up loot.
Divert my eyes from toys and trinkets, invigorate me on the pilgrim way.
Affirm your promises to me—promises made to all who fear you.
Deflect the harsh words of my critics—but what you say is always so good.
See how hungry I am for your counsel; preserve my life through your righteous ways!
Betsy’s praying of Psalm 119:33-40
Lord…you HAVE taught me what I need to know. Now please direct me in the steps to follow through!
Give me insight so I actually DO what you tell me – always – not just sporadically.
Because when I don’t, I just live the same cycle over and over. I want off this merry go round. I know YOU are the answer. YOU defeat my enemies totally. Now hitch me to YOU so I can’t swerve or be tempted or fail – make it automatic, second nature, instinctive, programmed, natural, inherent – to just DO as you command, guide, show, invite.
Lord! I LOVE traveling with you. It is my longing and desire. It is my life and well-being.
Guide me…enfold me…bind me to you so I can’t do anything but follow you.
Give me a bent for your words of wisdom. Write them on every thought and action. Let them be one with me.
Divert my eyes, hands, mouth from things that distract me or tempt me or pull me from the life I long for!
Affirm your promises to me. Infuse them in me so I can’t think or act any other way than what you design, ask or show.
Any harsh “words” or “calling” that is not of you, intercept them Lord I pray.
May my ears hear only your voice. May your voice work wonders and miracles in me.
I am hungry….so so hungry for you and your counsel, Lord. Preserve my life through your righteous ways. Pull me to you. Be triumphant, Lord I pray!!
