I read an interesting statistic, 54% of people abandon resolutions or goals by the 6th week of the new year. This caused me to pause and ponder…why is that? Are we not disciplined enough to stay on task? Are we not strong enough to do the hard work necessary to make the changes?
We all know that adding or deleting habits and making life changes can be difficult. Most resolutions or goals involve a long-term commitment. You don’t exercise or quit smoking for one month and then check it off your list! Once you choose the goal you are going to accomplish, you must incorporate it in your everyday living. This goal must be part of your “to do list” and schedule. And sometimes you must make drastic adjustments to make this goal a reality.
You also need accountability. The best scenario is to find someone who has the same goal as you and work on it together. You can meet to exercise, plan menus, organize closets, or memorize scripture. If it isn’t possible to meet in person, then check in by email or text. You need to find someone who will not only cheer you on, but will also hold you accountable to your plan and not let you off too easily!
This year, I have chosen two goals to accomplish. The first is living a healthy lifestyle through my eating and exercise and the second is to organize my office/work space and system. Since moving seven months ago and being newly single, these two areas need some adjustments.
Because I now cook and eat alone, I have found it harder to get in all my fruits and vegetables. So, I have found recipes for smoothies that combine a variety of these foods and give me the nutrients I am seeking. Sometimes you need to be creative to succeed, but don’t abandon your goal! Try a new method and if that doesn’t work, try another. Decide up front that you are going to look back at the end of the year and have accomplished your goal!
