Want to #BeWorthFollowing on social media? Then take to heart my top 20 tips!

  1. Social media is not about broadcasting; it’s about inviting people in through storytelling. What stories are you sharing?
  2. People connect with people, not logos. Provide a great looking headshot of yourself for your social media platforms.
  3. Stop studying your competitor and instead, study who you are!
  4. If all you do on social media is comment when you disagree, you are missing the bigger picture of what being social is all about!
  5. You can post all day, but if you are not posting content that your audience values, you will never see the engagement you are hoping for.
  6. You don’t have to attend every discussion/argument on social media. Use your time wisely.
  7. If your brand doesn’t have a human side, you will have issues reaching people!
  8. If you find yourself comparing, unfollow. If you find yourself using their voice/ideas/copy, unfollow. If you find yourself getting mad by what they post, unfollow. If you find yourself obsessing about what they are doing, unfollow.
  9. Instead of focusing on trying to go viral, focus your attention on being helpful.
  10. Do not have your FB posts go directly to your Twitter account. When you do, it gives off the impression that you are not really on Twitter.
  11. Stop griping, complaining and whining about your job on social media. Ultimately, this makes you look bad and whether you realize it or not, people are watching. When you do this, you are limiting yourself and your future opportunities.
  12. Stop worrying about what to post and instead, work on building YOU!
  13. What are your bios saying about you? Do they clearly let people know who you are, what you offer and how it can benefit them? Do your bios contain relevant keywords from your industry.
  14. Stop trying to get people to buy and/or connect with you on another platform in your Twitter DM. Engage first!
  15. Stop clogging the newsfeeds of people with your products and services. Aim to build a relationship first, not a sale!
  16. The way you present yourself online is either creating opportunities for you or it’s closing doors. What do others “see” when they get to your social media platforms?
  17. Social media is about impacting the lives of others and your numbers have NOTHING to do with that impact.
  18. Want social media success? Find your voice. What’s your story? What’s your message? Intertwine this in all you do on social media.
  19. Do not add people to your Facebook group without asking them first if they want to be a part of your group.
  20. They key to being someone who is worth following on social media is to #BeDifferent, serve and help others!

  1. I am glad I finally took the time to read this. You are right, I need to find out who I am, how I can serve others, and what my story is and stop expecting people to be paying attention to my posts of my “stuff.” This list is worth holding onto!
