The Dove Real Beauty Sketches video visually captures the realization that each of us is more beautiful than we think. It’s amazing the “story” we tell ourselves over and over that affects how we live our lives. How much time do you spend thinking:
- “I have such a large nose.”
- “My eyes disappear when I smile.”
- “My lips are too thin.”
- “I can’t do anything with my hair.”
- “Can I just trade my face in?”
We’ve all done it and maybe we don’t dwell on it much but most of us just don’t see ourselves as beautiful. When we look in a mirror, see pictures…or worse yet a video…we immediately start the critique.
However, if others were to describe you, they’d be more inclined to describe your eyes as laughing eyes, or kind and gentle eyes; your nose would be exotic; your lips might remind them of the many talks of encouragement you have; and your hair is likely to be…well….okay so maybe it’s true you really can’t do anything with your hair.
The DOVE Real Beauty video shows an artist sketching a woman as she describes herself. The artist can’t see the woman. He only goes by her description. She then leaves and someone who has been interacting with her comes in and describes the same woman. It’s amazing when you see the sketches. The first sketch, where the woman described herself, makes her look tired, angry, sad or heavier than she is. The second sketch of someone else describing her is more accurate of how she really looks. It’s amazing. You see this happening as other women are sketched too.
When the women see the two sketches they are stunned. They are brought to tears. And so was I. I, too, am so very guilty of seeing myself getting older, too heavy, and sagging neck. One of the women who saw her sketch said, “I need to be more grateful of my natural beauty. It impacts the choices and friends that we make, the jobs we apply for, how we treat our children. It impacts everything.”
A much younger woman, after seeing her two sketches, commented, “We spend so much time as women analyzing and trying to fix the things that aren’t quite right and we should spend more time appreciating the things that are right.”
I challenge you to look in the mirror and focus on what IS right.
This blog is not about our inner beauty. We all know that sermon. This is about embracing the beauty we DO have. Pick out something you DO love, like your eyes and make them sparkle when you talk. Or your teeth, and show them off with your smile. Or your long neck and enjoy wearing scarves and necklaces. Or your flair for style and use that to take attention away from the mid-section that is developing.
As you praise God for what you DO have you will focus less on yourself and more on the joy of life. You will focu
s on the fabulous people around you. Your eyes will open to all of God’s beauty and you will be able to appreciate the prickly cactus as well as the simple daisy. They are God’s creation – just the way they are – and so are YOU!! I hope the DOVE Real Beauty story touches your life!
Please leave a comment about what you see about yourself that you have chosen to really embrace.
