OK, so I LOVE to make clever titles for things but have learned that clever doesn’t equal easy to find. Now it is more important to include keywords, even if they don’t sound as clever, so your readers will actually find what you’ve written about. You need to combine clever and practical in order to make your blog title irresistible. The easiest way to do this is to try to think like your customers think.
Ask yourself before naming your blog post:
- What would they be typing in the search box in order to find something relating to your content?
- What words or phrases would they enter to get help for the ache you are solving in your post?
Once you’ve figured that out, be sure those exact words are in your title. If that first part doesn’t fully explain what you are going for with your post, you can add on to the title with a subtitle followed by a colon. For example, if your keyword comes up as “Summer Activities” but you want to talk about the free things you can do with your kids, then your title could be “Summer Activities: Free Things You Can Do With Your Kids This Summer”. Make sense?
These days, it isn’t enough to write a great blog post. You need to make it as easy as possible for your ideal customers to find it. So you may actually find yourself exerting the same energy you do when writing the post just to come up with the right title. That’s OK! After all, if you’ve written a fabulous post, you don’t want it to get ignored. So take that extra time and effort to name your post in a way that it will be found and read and shared!
Oh, and don’t forget to also leave them with one next step to take after they’ve read your post. Either point them to a Freebie they can download by subscribing to your list or send them to your website for more information on the topic.
