I have a new love: Bible Art Journaling! It is a beautiful combination of three of my favorite things: scripture, journaling, & art. Why did I never know about this before?!?! Oh well, trusting God’s timing is perfect for me to take on this new hobby. Also, my oldest daughter is excited to start art journaling with me over her summer break. It will be a fun way for us to hide His Word in our hearts together. I want to share why I love Bible Art Journaling and some tips to get you started if you think you would enjoy it too.
I’ve been journaling for a LONG time. I started with a travel journal when I was a kid. Then it progressed to a full-fledged diary with the little key to keep my younger sisters out of it. Now, I mostly journal my prayers. I started journaling my prayers for the practical purpose of helping me keep my train of thought from derailing while I prayed. I love that it also provides me with a record of God’s faithfulness, what I have worried about, and how God has rescued me from myself and my enemies. I’ve always loved art, art fairs, pretty things, and we won’t get started on my love of paper, stationary, pens, colored pencils, etc. So, coming from a long time love for journaling & art already, I am especially ecstatic about this new-to-me way to combine the great loves of my life.
If you love Jesus, art, and the Bible, then you will LOVE Bible Art Journaling! I should mention that you do NOT have to consider yourself an artist to do this. Even if you can’t draw a stick person, you will see fruit from this process. Among other things, Bible Art Journaling will help you:
- Memorize scripture: This is a great method for memorizing God’s Word. As you paint the picture, do art lettering, or use stickers to piece together a favorite verse, it will help the Word sink down deep in your heart and make it easier to “access” it in your mind when you need it.
- Relieve stress: We all need some time to slow down, reduce stress, and just BE. For me, this is a WONDERFUL creative way to do this. I also love that my girls have taken my lead and run for their art supplies when they see me art journaling: my 8 year old is journaling scripture in her journal, my three year old is coloring in her coloring book, and my 18 month old is busy tearing all of the paper off of her crayons. J
- Grow closer to God: I picture myself at His feet while I am journaling. Spending time with Him and listening for His voice as I literally draw out the words. I am soaking Him in as I journal and I believe that the Word is changing me, making me new, and providing me strength for whatever the day brings. What a beautiful way to honor my Creator by drawing, meditating, and chewing on His Word.

Do not be intimidated by the skill level MANY in this community have. Instead, let the beautiful entries inspire you to create something meaningful to you. You don’t ever have to share your art with anyone if you don’t want to. This is just ONE of many ways to worship the one who created YOU. Whatever you create with a heart toward Him is BEAUTIFUL.
