So if you are a sanguine with an outgoing personality like me, you don’t need a reason to go on a retreat because you want to go where the people are! But for some of you, this may be stepping out of your comfort zone to think about going someplace new and meeting new faces. Either way, I want to share 5 reasons why it is GOOD to go on a retreat and then I have an amazing one to tell you about!
Reason #1: Time away from “normal” to see what could be.
Sometimes you need to get away from your normal life to evaluate if your life is going the way you want or if you are in a rut. You may be in a challenging season right now as a caregiver for children or aging parents and you just need to get away for a couple of full-nights of sleep! Without some time to step away and look at your life, you can be too close to it all & you don’t see it clearly. A retreat allows you to look at things with a fresh perspective.
Reason #2: Time to consider the Bread Truck Theory.
Are you familiar with the Bread Truck Theory? The Bread Truck Theory states that if you were to be hit by a bread truck today and die, the world would find a way to keep moving without you. A tough pill to swallow I know. This is true for your job, your PTA committee, and even your family and friends. They would mourn and then they would have to move on. I want to spend my time with people I love doing things I love and fully living into my priorities. It’s OK to say no to things that don’t fit in with your priorities & it is wonderful to design and then live a life you love!
Reason #3: You deserve some time to yourself for yourself.
You are a person too. I know it’s easy to forget sometimes because it probably comes naturally to you to care for and about other people before you think of yourself. Well, stop that! If you don’t take care of yourself, you will get burnt out and be no good for those who depend on you anyway.
Reason #4: Meet new people
Remember summer camp, starting a new school year, or going off to college? The excitement of meeting new people and doing new things is something we hopefully never outgrow but as we get older, it gets harder and harder to make it happen. Retreats are a great way to meet new people who have something in common with you and have a similar objective in going. You may even get to “meet” someone you’ve already gotten to know online.
Reason #5: Get Inspired to live the life you really love.
I’m always amazed at how many ideas I come away with after being around people that I respect and admire. I get tips on everything from beauty secrets to how to get your kids to clean their rooms. I may learn about new music or a book that is a must read or a recipe that practically cooks itself. I get inspired by others and love to share when I’ve found something that works for me.
